Session on “Visual Interaction for Search Computing”
Organizer: Stefano Ceri, Piero Fraternali, Maristella Matera
Experts: Tiziana Catarci (Università di Roma La Sapienza), Stuart Card (Palo Alto Research Center), Alan Dix (Lancaster University), Moira Norrie (ETH Zürich), Gianluca Demartini (L3S Hannover)
When search gets complex, user interaction with search systems cannot be limited to independent keyword-based search sessions: on one hand, queries should be progressively developed and refined, with an exploratory approach; on the other hand, complex results - involving many domains and sources and different, potentially incomparable rankings - should be made available in user-friendly formats, which should also facilitate refinement actions such as focusing, expansion, clustering, diversification. This session aims at understanding which paradigms are most effective in supporting complex search interactions, and which quality criteria should guide the design of user interfaces for search systems.
